Neighbouring Rusutsu is also a popular resort for a day trip both to ski and also to play golf.
Just an hour and a half away on the northern coast is Otaru, a historical canal town famous for its old stone warehouses (ishi-tsukurisoko) and for its excellent seafood and sushi. Further around the coast is the Shakotan Peninsula known for its memorable seascapes and some of the freshest Hokkaido uni (sea urchin) and abalone in Japan.
En route to Otaru is Nippon Seishu Yoichi Wine Factory with its particular brand of sake and the Nikka Whisky Distillery in Yoichi made famous by the 2014 NHK drama “Massan” about the birth of Japanese whisky and its founder, Masataka Taketsuru.
